The WIIFM Principle of Blogging

December 29th, 2009 in Blogging Secrets

People want profit. They want gain. They do not want to waste their precious time and money. Are you able to provide that benefit to them? Are you able to answer their ‘WIIFM‘ questions?

You already must be imagining what is WIIFM. “WIIFM” stands for What In It For Me. Have you wondered how many times this though has come into your minds. You visit a shop to buy a camera. Shopkeeper shows you a camera different from what you asked. What do you ask him next?

What in it for me?

It may not be the exact same words but you mean this.

The WIIFM Principle readily applies to blogging as well. As a blogger your foremost duty is to provide your readers with best possible contents and informations. You are required to provide something helpful to them. You need to be able to answer their WIIFM questions. If you are not able to do those things you will never be able to get more reader and you will also start losing your current ones.

How do I answer this WIIFM question?

You do not need to answer them directly. You have to answer them by providing better content than others. Provide the information at its earliest. Be interactive and provide help. Give them a better reason to follow you (not by telling them, by content). Do something different from others. Be unique.

That sounds like lot of work. Not exactly! its simpler than it sounds. You just have to do your best. Keep the word “WIIFM – What in it for me” words in mind. And you will unbelievably do much better in blogging than before.

How many times have you raised the WIIFM question in your mind (not only in the field of blogging but others too)? What do you think of this principle?

Deepak, you have made an important point here. You also gave a reason why I like to follow smalller blogs compared to bigger blogs. Quite often we are bombarded my commercialized posts in the bigger blogs, but smaller blogs struggle to retain visitors and they do that by giving out important/useful information. Great point!

Due to money making such a great difference to people, they have forgotten what gives them pleasure and happiness. WIIFM: I would say “Happiness” , “joy” and “respect”

I adore and follow small blogs as there will be great quality rather than enticing offers… Small blogs value customers most and want them to be constant readers
