I Will Simply Delete Them

January 6th, 2010 in Spam Control

No Spam - I will simply Delete themWarning: This post is a very disturbing to weak hearted people involved in non ethical practices especiallly blog comment spamming.

Hope you read the warning nice and clear. You are probably going to hate me for this. But I am ready to take the risks and want you to read this post loud and clear.

Have you heard of the very nasty word called ‘SPAM‘ more specifically ‘SPAM COMMENTS“. We all hate them, right? But today I will not be telling about simple Spam Comments but something nastier and shameful than these. I call them “AMAZING SPAM COMMENTS“.

What are Amazing Spam Comments?

Amazing Spam Comments are a special category of Spam Comments. They would have been called a Comment if they were put on a different post.  But the comment somehow ended on a unrelated post.

Can you explain it, with examples?

Sure. Look at the two comments below.

  • thanks for the information you provide through this article, add to my knowledge and made me want to visit your other articles.
  • many interesting things to discuss, I am happy to visit your blog, because there is always new, new topics, interesting and inviting pros and cons of visitors.

The above two comments do not look like Spam but do you know where these were posted. They were posted on my 448$ New Year Bonanza Contest post. Now what do you think about these? Are they SPAM or NOT?

Here is one more example.

  • I am glad to visit your blog, lots of useful information that I got, hopefully better next year again, happy new year 2010, success was always

This is probably not a Spam but the fishy thing about this comment is, it was linking to some diabetes site and the words “lots of useful information”. My blog is new and there is no way someone found lots of information. Even if the commentator somehow found lots of info on my site, I cannot approve this kind of comments.

What do I do with these types of Comments?

I simply delete them. I keep some of them in Trash (like the aboves), so that I can laugh at them. I am student and after getting bored with studies, I need something to relieve my stress. These comments make me laugh and relieves my stress.

What do you do with Spam comments? How do you recognize the unusual SPAM (Spam Comment which do not actually look like Spam)? And my final question, do you hate me after reading this post (Spammers need not answer, I already know their answers – you are free to send me hate mails)?

Those are definitely a spam. People use to copy-paste comments on different blogs without even reading the article. Posting a comment without reading an article is really a bad habit and they just do for getting more n more links. You took a nice step (courageous), wish you all the best.

It’s tempting to delete them, isn’t it? But I have a better way of dealing with it!

Well, it works for me, and makes me a bit happier. What I do is to change the name and URL of the commentator. That way they don’t get the linkback, but instead I give it to someone who deserves it.

Maybe it’s a bad thing to do, I dunno, but it makes me feel a bit better! :p

The first time I got it, I was like “That’s cool.” Then, it happened at a contest post for me and I was like “Alright, clever spam.” I just go ahead and delete it straightaway.

Simon, that’s a cool thought. However, I might give a second thought on doing that because you aren’t allowed to take other people’s content and everyone knows that, but you also can’t claim someone else wrote it. Comments, it may not be a huge issue, but you never know… :(

I like Teenuis’ idea above! That’s a good one, especially for those times when you’re not sure. Sometimes I’m not sure, so I do a google search of the comment text and see they’ve used the same text on lots of other websites – in that case it’s obviously spam but sometimes it is difficult. I’ve begun to be a bit more strict, but in general I may keep the comment and just change the link if I’m not sure.

Well, the above examples does not look spam to me, although I’m a little bit disturbed about the grammatical composition. Perhaps I should be wary of the relevancy of my commentators to distinguish spams. Thanks for this useful information, I never knew this kind of spam. :-)

How do I differentiate spam comments? Well, like what you have mentioned, spam comments give you a very universal response, which it can be applied to all of your post with different topics.

After this post, maybe comment spammer will start thinking of how to make their spammer bots answer with artificial intelligence.

I like to edit them. :D Changing some links around in the comments works pretty well, too.

I received many comments like this after I switched my blog to a dofollow blog. I became more strict in approving comment after I decided to make my blog dofollow. Same to you, I’ll just delete comment that I don’t feel comfortable (Of course not deleting bad comment that criticize about you, they are genuine comments).

I get a lot of comments like these as well… send them straight to spam.

The tough ones are the general comments that do not include an outbound link. So not sure if someone just left a “blah” comment just to comment, or they’re a spammer looking to get approved once, and take advantage of WordPress’ “commenter must have 1 approved comment to get pre-approval” default setting.

I’m assuming they do this so they can sneak in a backlink on a second comment that the blog owner might not review.
